Obama's State Senate Record Will Hurt Him Badly
A review of Barack Obama's State Senate record reveals some "hot button" issues that will cause him some grief in a race against John McCain. Here is the list of problem votes during his time as a State Senator from Illnois:
- Voted against making permanent the repeal of the state's 5 percent sales tax on gasoline. (2000)
- Supported higher taxes, raising more than 300 taxes and fees on businesses in 2004 to help solve a budget deficit.
- He opposed letting people use a self-defense argument if charged with violating local handgun bans by using weapons in their homes. The bill was a reaction to a Chicago-area man who, after shooting an intruder, was charged with a handgun violation.
- He voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive, the fetuses would sometime survive for hours.
- He sponsored a measure to expunge criminal records and create an employment grant program for ex-criminals. (2002)
- He voted to limit the purchase of handguns to one a month.
- Voted against making gang members eligible for the death penalty if they kill someone to help their gang. (2001)
Look for these issues to hurt Obama against John McCain and strengthen Hillary Clinton's arguments that he is probably unelectable.

Obama is already saying that Republican attempts to paint him with the dreaded "L" word - LIBERAL - are doomed to failure and distasteful to voters. Well, all McCain will need to do in the debates with Obama is keep Obama's voting record on a piece of scrap paper - a very small piece will do given Obama's meager record. McCain could probably commit it all to memory. Whenever Obama makes a promise or starts spinning about "change" and "unity," McCain can simply challenge him with the only real evidence voters have to weigh Obama's credibility - his voting record - his RADICALLY LIBERAL voting record. McCain will not even need to use the "L" word because Obama's voting record will make everything clear to voters.
First of all, there's a lot more to scrutinize in McCain's voting record. Secondly, I like most of those things mentioned. Especially the expungement for ex-offenders. In this country, people who have been arrested are punished unfairly for the remainder of their lives through employment descrimination. In the case of non-violent offenders, this is a huge issue.
Brian, I bet you really loved the vote about not helping aborted babies, hey? I am sure O will get people like you no matter what he says but the amount of people like you that support would be enough to maybe win Ma. So flamers flame on for Barry O and help him to a 49 state fall.
don't forget his public and not so public comments, like clinging to guns and religion and especially "punished with a baby."
Brian: "Especially the expungement for ex-offenders. In this country, people who have been arrested are punished unfairly for the remainder of their lives through employment discrimination."
Your concern for ex-offenders is admirable, but what about Obama's vote to let accidentally aborted babies just die? Ex-offenders are guilty of crimes; aborted babies are innocent. Obama is totally unconcerned about them. I'd say his compassion is misplaced and his moral values are terribly confused.
Plus don't forget about the 129 present votes and why won't he release his schedule from that time?
"First of all, there's a lot more to scrutinize in McCain's voting record."
Of course there is. McCain spent 22 years in the Senate to Obama's three - and for the past year and a half Obama has been running for president. And let's not forget to add up all of McCain's military honors: the Purple Heart Medal, the Silver Star Medal, following torture by the North Vietnamese trying to, "obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes." Then there are the Navy Commendation Medal, the Legion of Merit, with a combat "V" and one gold star, a Distinguished Flying Cross and a Bronze Star Medal with a combat "V" and two gold stars. McCain attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1954 to 1958, and was commissioned as an ensign in June of that year. He retired in April 1981 with the rank of captain. In that time he received 17 awards and decorations.
These are honors Obama simply cannot compete with or spin. Compared to Sen. McCain, Obama is a do-nothing with a mediocre record. His only claim to the presidency is his race and elitist sense of entitlement, which is fueled by sheer vain political ambition - and Michelle Obama's racial grievances which she thinks entitles her husband to be president. I cannot imagine that the American people will ever elect Obama to the White House. They will choose a hero over a wimp, a man of substance and experience over an empty suit every time.
I personally think Obama is right. Unborn babies that aren't killed right the first time should have to suffer in pain until they gasp their last breath. However, gang members who commit murder and rapes in order to prove how hard they are should have their records expunged, in order to make everything more fair.
Also, gang members shouldn't get an unduly harsh sentence, however the ratbastards that shoot gang members breaking into their houses should. I mean, that guy was just going to kill you to step up his position in the gang, why do you want to deny him that?
I am glad we have a candidate who is so in touch with the American people.
The only voting block this will hurt him with are the folks that are going to vote for McCain no matter what Obama has said or done.
You seem to have forgotten that the man is a DEMOCRATIC candidate and has voted to support the DEMOCRATIC ideas and ideals.
When I look back on what four unfettered years of right wing leadership has done, no one is too far to the left for me.
WAKE UP
Obama said he goofed on votes angered fellow Democrats in the Senate when he voted to strip millions of dollars from a child welfare office on Chicago's West Side. But Obama had a ready explanation: He goofed!
Also announced he had fumbled an election-reform vote the day before, on a measure that passed 51 to 6. The next day, he acknowledged voting "present" on a key telecommunications vote. He stood on March 11, 1999, to take back his vote against legislation to end good-behavior credits for certain felons in county jails. "I pressed the wrong button on that," he said. Obama was the lone dissenter on Feb. 24, 2000, against 57 yeas for a ban on human cloning. "I pressed the wrong button by accident," he said.
But two of Obama's bumbles came on more-sensitive topics, he backed legislation to permit riverboat casinos to operate even when the boats were dockside.
The measure, pushed by the gambling industry and fought by church groups whose support Obama was seeking, passed with two "yeas" to spare -- including Obama's. Moments after its passage he rose to say, explaining that he had mistakenly voted for it.
Obama would later develop a reputation as a critic of the gambling industry, and he voted against a similar measure two years later. But he was clearly confused about how to handle the issue at the time of his first vote, telling a church group that he was "undecided" about whether he backed an expansion of riverboat gambling. And, months earlier, he had voted in favor of a version of the bill.
Obama's vote sparked a confrontation after he joined Republicans to block Democrats trying to override a veto by GOP Gov. George Ryan of a $2-million allotment for the west Chicago child welfare office. being responsible," said Sen. Rickey Hendon, accusing Obama of voting to close the child welfare office.Obama replied "I understand Sen. Hendon's anger, I was not aware that I had voted no on that piece of legislation.
He voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive. Abortion opponents see Obama's vote on medical care for aborted fetuses as a refusal to protect the helpless. Some have even accused him of supporting infanticide.
Striking similarities between Barack Obama's words and those of Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick during his 2006 election campaign have raised eyebrows and attracted traffic on YouTube. The stump speech Barack Obama has been giving aimed at convincing voters that his campaign is not just about lofty rhetoric — is from Patrick, Obama's campaign acknowledged over the weekend.
The problem is that Obama is ultra liberal. This isn't a problem in the Democratic primary, but always is in the general election. Bill Clinton was by no means ultra liberal and he won twice...Kerry, who is ultra liberal, was destroyed in a year any other Democrat would have won.
The Dems don't get it, never have. The country is neither far left nor far right. When either party puts up a radical, that radical gets blown away. Had America known what a fruit cake Bush was...he would have never won.
We know Obama is far left.
Oh...and the far right doesn't get it either. They are under the delusion that the entire believes as they do.
